WALTER CALLS ON COMMISSIONER KING TO RESIGN

Walter joins NYSUT’s call to have NYSED Commissioner King resign over Common Cor

Assemblyman Ray Walter (R,C,I-Amherst) today called on New York State Education Commissioner John King, Jr. to resign over the failed policies and handling of the New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) implementation of Common Core. Walter joined in New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) demand that King steps down and that drastic changes are made with Common Core.

“After Commissioner King's unresponsive testimony at the education budget hearings and his doubling-down on the current policies surrounding Common Core he has clearly lost touch with the students, parents, teachers and administrators in the State,” said Walter.  “I stand behind the recent vote of no confidence by NYSUT. I am calling on Commissioner King to be removed and for the Board of Regents to find a replacement with the ability to be responsive to the needs of our children, parents and educators.”

Walter and his colleagues in the Assembly Minority recently unveiled the Achieving Pupil Preparedness & Launching Excellence (APPLE) Plan to fix NYSED’s policies. The APPLE Plan was conceived after 11 different hearings were held across the state, and is a direct result of the testimony received from hundreds of concerned parents, teachers and administrators at these hearings.
