Walter, Santa Celebrate Early Christmas with Toy Drive at Hospital

Assemblyman Ray Walter delivers toys to Kaleida Health’s Women and Children’s Hospital.

Assemblyman Ray Walter (R,C,I-Amherst) recently delivered hundreds of donated toys to Kaleida Health’s Women and Children’s Hospital, concluding his Christmas in July Toy Drive. Walter had several eager volunteers, including Sabretooth (the Buffalo Sabres’ mascot) and Santa Claus, to help distribute the gifts.  This summer, Walter and his staff collected donations of new toys for sick children at the hospital, garnering an overwhelming amount of community support and resulting in a fantastic event that brought smiles to the faces of many patients.

“The happiness and holiday joy that we’ve been able to bring to these brave kids is a result of the generosity of countless numbers of people in our community,” said Walter. “This year’s Christmas in July Toy Drive has been a great success and I want to thank the many individuals and organizations who joined together to make this event possible.”

Walter indicated that during the drive, residents, businesses, churches and organizations dropped off toys at various locations across Western New York. Walter noted that two organizations in particular collected donations and he thanked the local GEICO branch and Stroller Strides for their generosity and hard work over the past month. Presents were given to each patient and more will be distributed throughout the year.

In addition, Walter thanked Tyler and Ryan Malburg for their donations to the toy drive. The boys, ages three and six, have a special bond with the hospital and its patients after young Tyler was born at the hospital, spent two weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit dealing with oxygen desaturation, a breathing complication, and will return for a major surgery to address his kidney reflux this November. The Malburg family donated dozens of toys to this year’s drive to give back to the hospital and its patients in a very joyful way.

"We are so grateful to Assemblyman Ray Walter for spearheading this Christmas in July Toy Drive to help brighten the day for many of our patients throughout this summer," said Tara Young, Child Life Specialist.  "These wonderful gifts donated by many in our generous community will certainly be enjoyed by our patients and thereby help them through the healing process here at Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo."
